Dental Anxiety and Dental Phobia

We are conscious at Pearly Whites Dental that dental anxiety and dental phobia are common and we can help you manage it. When dental anxiety is severe and results in fear and complete avoidance of going to the dentist, it can be classified as a dental phobia.

  • Dental anxiety can be caused by:
a traumatic dental experience or other healthcare experience(s)
  • previous trauma to the head and neck
  • other traumatic experiences, including abuse
  • generalised anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder
  • the view that the mouth is a personal area and accessing the mouth is an invasion of personal space
  • fear of loss of control
  • trust issues
  • anxiety associated with other conditions such as agoraphobia (fear of being in situations where you feel you cannot escape), claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces), or obsessive-compulsive disorder where there is an obsession around cleanliness can make access to dental care more difficult.

For in-depth information about dental anxiety and phobia please click here.

If anxiety prevents you from seeking dental treatment, there are strategies we can put in place to help you cope so please talk to us so that we can work out which strategies are right for you.

Dental anxiety can be managed often by a caring and compassionate environment, a TV on the roof and noise-canceling headphones, aromatherapy, music, and laughter.

Dental Phobia can often be managed with a medication such as Diazepam (Valium), a referral for Hypnosis, or a referral for General Anaesthetic/IV sedation. At Pearly Whites Dental we have had many patients overcome their dental phobia and anxiety.

We promise you that we will not judge you, get angry with you or be impatient with you if you are really really scared, cry or find it difficult to talk to us. We are here to help and we strive to listen well, with compassion and kindness to help you.

General Dentistry

Avoiding the dentist can result in the worsening of dental disease, a greater need for emergency care, or more complex treatment. Regular dental check-ups, clean,s and screening X-rays can prevent dental disease and help the dentist find any problems early so that simpler and less invasive treatments are needed.

Most dental disease is lifestyle-related and preventable. By avoiding going to the dentist, not only are you more likely to need more complex treatments when you do finally attend, but you are also missing out on learning how to better care for your oral health.

The lifestyle factors that lead to dental disease are very similar to those that lead to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers, so taking care of your oral and general health is very important.

Children’s Dentistry

At Pearly Whites Dental we are committed to children having a GREAT experience at the Dentist. Our top priority is for your precious child to have a happy and pain-free experience at the Dentist so that we can advise you on any dental concerns we have and so that they can get used to coming to the Dentist. Hopefully, they don’t need treatment but if they do we want them to get through any dental procedures so that they leave with healthy teeth and healthy habits and are not scared to come next time

We provide all sorts of advice and treatment to prevent dental disease including fissure sealants and fluoride treatment.

Also BIG NEWS! Luisa Hungerford-Morgan has joined us recently. She has previously worked as a Dental Assistant at Pearly Whites in 2017 and then loved Dentistry so much she left Broome to attend Melbourne University’s Dental Program. This year she graduated with a Bachelor of Oral Health. Dr McIntosh and Dr McPharlin are very excited that Luisa has returned to Broome as she is up to date with all the latest in dental care and research specific to children and will be the main provider of dental care for children and teenagers.

The Bachelor of Oral Health has combined vocational outcomes in hygiene and therapy.  Dental hygienists provide dental care for all age groups. They examine and record the nature and severity of periodontal conditions, and clean, scale, and root-plane teeth.  Dental therapists provide dental care for children and adolescents.

Childrens Dentistry

Child Dental Benefits Scheme

You may be eligible for this Government Scheme and that means you do not have to wait for free dentistry through the School Dental Service which is so busy and overloaded in Broome. This scheme covers part or the full cost of some dental services for children if you get certain payments from the Government

To get this your child must be:

  • 2 to 17 years old for at least 1 day that year
  • eligible for Medicare
  • getting a payment from us at least once a year, or have a parent getting a payment from the Government at least once a year.

You can call us at Pearly Whites and if you give us your Medicare Details we can check to see if your child or teenager is eligible.

Teeth Whitening

It is so easy to get your teeth whitened.

We take a mold of your teeth and this is sent to our laboratory for whitening trays. You then decide with your dentist which bleach will best suit your lifestyle either a bleach that stays on your teeth for around 1.5 hours or a gentler bleach that you leave in overnight.

Currently, at Pearly Whites Dental we are using Boutique Whitening.

Please follow this link for more information.

Teeth straightening (Simple Orthodontics)

Dr Angela McIntosh can advise you on whether you are suitable for Short term Orthodontics to straighten your teeth with aligners or ceramic (tooth coloured) braces. If you are not eligible and have more complex needs she is more than happy to refer you to the visiting orthodontist that comes up to Broome once a month.

They are our only visiting specialists so we are lucky to have them!

If you are suitable for removable clear aligners or fixed clear braces we will take photographs and moulds of your teeth which are then submitted to QuickStraightTeeth™ Mentors for advice and assistance with treatment planning.

Whatever the method we will check your progress periodically and when you are happy with your smile we will fit retainers.

Treatment takes between 4 and 12 months, with most treatments taking 6 months.

Whatever the method you will end up with beautiful straight white teeth.
